Adult Therapy
In adult therapy, I focus on creating a sense of warmth and safety so clients can explore the issues that are going on in their lives.
Depending on the reason a client comes to therapy, we may explore patterns of relationships with others and themselves. We may also look at coping mechanisms that aren't working anymore. We may address and resolve past traumas and negative relationship patterns, thus providing more choices for creating what they want.
I provide a secure sounding board and give honest feedback. My approach is eclectic in that my work is grounded in strength-based theories. I work in a collaborative way with clients when creating plans of action. It is important to me that clients feel they are in the driver’s seat.
If working on a short term goal, I help clients get very clear on their goal and provide accountability . . .
Child Therapy
In the therapy I do with children, I take the time to get to know the child and the parents. I do include the parents in regular meetings so we can work together effectively. This is something that is important that I do that may be different than other psychotherapists. I keep parents informed and coordinate care.
My therapy is very child directed through play as opposed to a classroom teacher type of experience. Depending on the issue, each child will have their own relationship with me and the work will be guided by the relationship. Therapies could include play therapy, sand tray, art therapy, developmentally appropriate talk therapy, etc.
Adolescent Therapy
In adolescent therapy, building trust and a safe place for the teen to express themselves freely is of vital importance to me. I have an assessment period of a few sessions and then a meeting or two with the parents to get family history. Then I meet with the adolescent again for a few sessions in order to determine the best treatment plan. I meet with the parents again to discuss the treatment plan.
Depending on the teens situation, I generally start with talk therapy, but if they are willing to engage with art, I will bring in other play therapy in order to keep the teen engaged and interested. This is especially important with some shy teens who might be intimidated with direct talk therapy.
Parent Coaching
In parent coaching, I come from the approach that the parents are the experts in their child, and I become a part of the team. I help parents understand their child's behaviors, develop strategies and tools, and create a team attitude instead of one that is adversarial. This helps parents change their reactions to their child and their child's reaction to them. Ultimately, parents change how they interact with their child, so the child can be more successful.
